A Concerning Rise in Breast Cancer Cases

KARACHI – Professor Jehan Ara, Pro-Vice Chancellor at Dow University of Health Sciences, has raised serious concerns over the growing number of **breast cancer cases** among young women in Pakistan. She revealed that cases are now being reported in women **under 25**, an alarming trend that demands urgent attention from both healthcare professionals and the public.

During a Breast Cancer Awareness Symposium organized by Dow University, Professor Jehan Ara highlighted the critical need for **early detection** and **preventive healthcare** practices. She advised young women to regularly perform **self-examinations** and immediately consult a doctor if they notice any unusual changes or lumps.

“Screening was once recommended mainly for women above 40,” she stated. “However, since **early diagnosis saves lives**, awareness must begin much earlier.”

Affordable Screening Initiatives at Dow University

In recognition of **Breast Cancer Awareness Month**, the Dow Institute of Radiology is offering **mammography** and other breast cancer screening tests at **discounted rates** throughout October. These initiatives aim to make life-saving diagnostic services more accessible to women across Pakistan.

The event featured other distinguished speakers, including Dr. Nasreen Naz, Director of the Dow Institute of Radiology; Dr. Anila Naz, Dr. Samita Asad, Dr. Ayesha, Dr. Umaima Saleem, Dr. Nosheen Fatima, Dr. Shaista Afzal, and Dr. Paras.

Alarming Statistics in Pakistan’s Healthcare Landscape

Professor Jehan Ara shared that **one in every eight women** is affected by breast cancer. However, she emphasized that **early detection** and **lifestyle modifications** can significantly reduce the disease’s high mortality rate.

Meanwhile, Professor Nasreen Naz revealed that more than **2.3 million women** in Pakistan are currently battling breast cancer, ranking the country among the most affected globally. Every year, Pakistan records around **90,000 new breast cancer cases**, while 109 women die daily worldwide due to the disease.

Despite the rising numbers, awareness remains low. “Many women do not take screening seriously, even when they are aware of the risks,” she noted, adding that Dow University provides full diagnostic facilities, including **biopsy, tomography, and mammography**, at its Ojha and LEJ campuses.

Awareness and Education Are Key

Dr. Anila Raheem stressed that October serves as a reminder for women to prioritize their health. She explained that breast cancer accounts for **21% of all cancers in women globally**, underscoring the disease’s widespread impact.

She also educated attendees on recognizing symptoms, explaining that even **painless lumps could be cancerous**. “Painful lumps are often infections, but painless ones should **never be ignored**,” she advised.

Honoring Efforts and Encouraging Continued Action

At the close of the event, Professor Jehan Ara distributed certificates to the speakers and participants, commending their efforts in raising awareness and promoting women’s healthcare in Pakistan.

Experts concluded that combating breast cancer requires a **unified approach** — combining **awareness, accessibility, and preventive healthcare** to protect the nation’s women from this growing threat.
